How to Open a Garage Door When the Power Is Out

How to Open a Garage Door When the Power Is Out

An automatic garage door is convenient for daily living and has become a staple in many households. It can be frustrating if the power’s out and you need to open the garage door to park or go out. Follow this easy guide to open a garage door when there’s no power and reconnect it once the power is back on.

Unplug the Garage Door Opener

Have a flashlight handy if it’s dark. If you are able to, it is recommended to first unplug the garage door opener from the socket. The power may be out, but it can come back any time. The abrupt surge of electricity may damage the opener, and unplugging it protects the system. This step is not necessary if you are unable to safely reach the garage door opener to unplug it.

Ensure Your Garage Door Is in a Down Position

The door must be shut and not open before pulling the release cord. While the garage door stands open, the springs are still under tension, holding up the full weight of the door. The springs remain under tension once the garage door is disconnected from the opener. If they’re weak, damaged or broken, the door will fall abruptly and slam to the ground, potentially causing serious injury or damage.

Find and Pull the Release Cord

To open the garage door during an outage, you’ll need to locate and pull the emergency release cord. The cord has a red handle, and you’ll find it hanging from the garage door trolley. Pull the handle firmly. You’ve now disengaged the garage door and can use it during a power outage.

Lift the Garage Door Manually

You can open the garage door and use your garage. If you can’t lift the door and it’s too heavy, the springs may be damaged, meaning you’re carrying the full weight of the door. Don’t attempt anything with the garage door and call an expert to assess it.

Close and Lock the Door

If you were able to open the garage door, remember to close and lock it when you’re done. Locking the door is especially important when the garage door has no power, as the automatic function is disabled. You can use a deadlock or slide bolt to secure the door.

How to Reconnect the Garage Door Opener

Once the power goes back on, you’ll want to reconnect the garage door opener to the door. In most cases, the opener reconnects with the door once it’s switched on. Sometimes, you’ll have to pull the emergency release cord.

Follow the steps below:

1. Close the Garage Door

Before reconnecting the garage door, close it fully. If the door’s still open, the process may not work properly. Keeping the door closed when disengaging and reconnecting is also safer.

2. Plug in the Garage Door Opener

If you unplugged the garage door opener earlier, ensure the power switch on the socket is turned off before plugging the garage door opener back in. Plug the garage door opener in and then flip the switch on the outlet. That way, the power is transferred to the opener in a safe and controlled way.

3. Reconnecting Automatically

Once the garage door opener is plugged in and switched on, press the button on the wall control or your remote. The trolley should start to move along the rail. Allow the garage door opener to fully open and close, and try not to interfere with the process. It’s also a good idea to check that the reconnection was correct — the trolley should run along the rail smoothly.

4. Reconnecting Manually

In some cases, like if you have an older garage door opener model or if there’s an obstruction, you may need to do the reconnection manually. Pull the emergency release cord toward the door. You may hear a clicking sound, which is the trolley resetting.

Test that the garage door works by pressing the garage door remote or wall panel button. Let the garage door open and close fully to ensure the system is back up and running. You can now use your garage door as usual.
